Perfect Sledding Day

Highland Bowl at Highland Park

January 4, 2003

A perfect day for sledding. Temperature 30o. Several days of layering snow with no thaws. Warm enough to enjoy it. Cool enough to keep the snow perfect.

We invited Bridgette from across the street. She was so helpful - always carrying Gabe's sled to the top of the hill and helping him up. Even I had a hard time climbing the hill. I had to crawl at the top to keep from slipping back down.

All the kids had a blast. I wondered how Gabe would do but when we got to the top of the hill, I put him in the sled, pointed him downhill, and pushed. He flew to the bottom without a care in the world.

Our van in background shows how close we could park to the back of the ridge.
The Top of the Hill
The Top of the Hill
Looking sideways across the top of the hill. A nice long ridge with plenty of room for everyone to spread out and head down the hill. Trees on the hill provided nice cover for those walking up the hill to stay out of the way of others careening down. (To the left is the slope down; to the right is the street where we park.)

This was Bridgette's tube, the most popular sled of the day.

None of the kids had any fears flying down the hill, even with plenty of wipeouts.

Josiah and Bridgette can barely be seen on the top of the hill. The debate rages as to whether that is Gabe in red climbing up the hill. I think Priscilla in blue is walking up the hill.

I like this picture. Nathan was flying and catching snow up in his face and loving it.

Not once did I see any of our kids cry (except to argue over who got a sled and even that was short-lived). Every wipe-out and crash into one another caused laughter.

I liked this picture because the camera tracks well with Nathan and blurs the background. I also captured the spray of snow as he tried to steer.

Highland Bowl
Highland Bowl
Just recording our location next to the Highland Bowl. We'll check out some other slopes at Highland Park. But I think this is the ideal slope (wide, steep, short, close to the road to park) for the kiddos.
